rehashing comments I made at 2:30am about MK police strategy, which I think is a diff species than we've seen before (warning: many tweets)

> (a) lots of head fakes. theres's a chicken or the egg? question about whether police show up to where protesters are or vice versa

2014-11-27 14:12:08

> I saw a lot of what looked like police showing up in 'high ground' spots that they could fight well in, and drew protesters there.

> examples: west Soy and Reclamation, blocks from Nathan. Easy prey. No reason for protesters to have drifted that far

2014-11-27 14:14:03

> Shan Tung & Nathan was just a cauldron, a machine to draw 'radicals' in, wear them down, arrest. Police never used it to charge through

2014-11-27 14:15:09

> police 'owned' Mong Kok because they were working w/ jiu-jitsu like knowledge of how protesters would react to their own movements.

2014-11-27 14:18:21

> last night Sai Yeung Choi kept 2/3 - 3/4 of protesters on strategically unimportant spot, 2 blocks from Argyle. Nathan unchallenged

2014-11-27 14:18:33

> (b) for the most part, careful and selective targeting for arrests. Every charge west of Nathan had tactical objective of 2-3 arrests

2014-11-27 14:20:05

> (c) much more careful management of human resources. Shifting police in and out, letting them take rests, giving them safe zones to rest

2014-11-27 14:20:57

> (d) nuanced crowd control; not just kettling, but 'mazing' - it was often difficult to get between strategically important spots.

2014-11-27 14:21:49

> on the same 'mazing' issue, they kept clashes far apart, couldn't see or hear (Nathan and Reclamation Tuesday; Argyle and Soy last night)

2014-11-27 14:23:12

> it amounts to something very different than what we'd seen first 50 days, especially idiocy of first weekend.

2014-11-27 14:24:45

> I get the sense that (a) they planned several days out for weeks, and (b) they're not being managed from Shenzhen anymore.

2014-11-27 14:26:04

> Admiralty occupiers need to study these tactics. Mong Kok Occupation was out-maneuvered over 48 hrs, not taken with brute force or luck.

2014-11-27 14:27:03

> if MK strategy comes to Admiralty, police will begin w/ a head fake near Central or Queensway. Divide, then conquer by drawing into Tamar

2014-11-27 14:29:03

> like Sai Yeung Choi, I expect police will pretend to fight for Tamar to draw people there for a staged hollow victory.

2014-11-27 14:30:38

> I think what I'm saying makes sense when you consider Tuesday's ultra-violence on Shan Tung and the fact that the battle was for nothing.

2014-11-27 14:35:22

> Shan Tung's pepper water & batons were a magnet drawing ppl in to get their asses kick. Police walked through 'front door' 12 hrs later.

2014-11-27 14:36:42

I'm certain that if mapped it out, you'd see an inverse proportion w/ the level of police violence used and the strategic value of the spot

Amidst vids of Joshua Wang's capture, note the difference in tactics from a month ago. Concentrated, targeted violence; opposite of tear gas

In Battle of Mong Kok I they were still attacking crowds at large. In II, every charge I saw was coming after a handful of front-liners

2014-11-27 20:22:08

In Battle of MK I all of Argyle was a battlefield, front lines came to you. In II it was quite difficult to reach Shan Tung-Nathan battle

. @RichScotford in 90+ minutes in MK Tuesday night, I only saw on real nasty act of violence (throwing a kid against a truck).

2014-11-27 21:18:57

. @RichScotford there was an awful lot of violence happening that night, but police were drawing ppl to specific spots they had chosen

2014-11-27 21:19:31

. @RichScotford I didn't even see the pepper water tower - I was at the Shan Tung intersection but ppl said not to turn corner w/o a helmet
