I am so tired of people losing their jobs for having had opinions in the past, let alone in the present. hollywoodreporter.com/news/loreals-f… #AmenaKhan 1/

I suspect that, in 20 years, past social media posts while young will not be held against public figures, just like marijuana use in college is no longer held against politicians and other public figures today. 2/

And I deplore online mobs that simply seek scalps for the hell of it, whether on the left or right. 3/

And I recognize that there is a spectrum of beliefs, some potentially so extreme that a company would not want to be associated with such views, quite reasonably so. If Amena had expressed anti-Semitic opinions, that would qualify, in my book at least. 4/

Finally, I think we need to allow for people, especially young people, to have the opportunity to grow and revise their beliefs and views. No one wants to be held to every opinion they have ever expressed, especially if expressed in haste, online, or while young. 5/

Consider this related case: this young Arab woman was hounded for the simple, human act of a selfie with Miss Israel! A professor based in the US, tweeted: "The beauty queen of Iraq is happily posing with the beauty queen of occupation and brutality." bbc.com/news/blogs-tre… 6/

The motto seems to be, if you are an Arab woman, do not express any thoughts publicly about Israel, whether pro *or* con. IMHO, this type of mentality is not healthy in an open society (which, I know, many Arab states are not, but the US and UK are). 7/

Surely no one in a free society would want to emulate the plans under way in China for a Social Credit System? The government (or industry) could rate everyone in a national reputation system. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Cr… 8/
