We experienced the earthquake occurred in Ibaraki

Georgia Elliott @GElliott248

In Japan to learn about natural hazards and I manage to sleep through a 5.4 earthquake 🤷🏼‍♀️ Will have to rely on the lectures to work out what I should have been experiencing! 🇯🇵⛰ #GeoHazardsNCP18 @NewColomboPlan @ANU_CPAS twitter.com/newearthquake/…

Perfect start to the Geological Hazards course: typhoon AND an earthquake! Slept through the earthquake though😭 #GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU pic.twitter.com/QsTW24Z5ES

Considering we're on a geological hazards trip in 日本, waking up to a 5.6 magnitude quake was certainly something. You don't realise how lucky we are to live in Australia until you feel something like this! #GeoHazardsNCP18 @UTokyo_News @ANU_CPAS @anuearthscience @scienceANU pic.twitter.com/8z7SdLIPBj

Magnitude 5.5 earthquake offshore of Ibaraki prefecture, but in Kashiwa was only a 2 on the JMA scale so others slept through it. I checked the app recommended earlier, and could immediately see all the relevant info. Effective science communication! #GeoHazardsNCP18 @scienceANU pic.twitter.com/F9EZpFnY7e

Effective science communication regarding this morning's earthquake off the coast of Ibaraki 🌊 It is important that the public can rely on (and trust) scientists to provide them with accurate information and Japan is very good at this! 👍🏼 #GeoHazardsNCP18 @scienceANU twitter.com/InterFM897/sta…

5.6 quake rocks off Ibaraki coast at around 5:11 am. Depth was about 60 km. There's no risk of tsunami. jma.go.jp/en/quake/image… (JMA)

Lectures done. It’s fascinating learning about natural disasters response systems. Reminds me of SCOM3027 & 2031 @ANU_CPAS #GeoHazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/gJLFqRD3AS

Woke up to tremors from the 5.4 magnitude earthquake near the Fukushima prefecture this morning. Although earthquakes are not unusual in Japan, they can still be quite scary! #GeohazardsNCP18 #earthquakes pic.twitter.com/fwb3YEgAc3

A unexpected wake up call happened to all of us on the #geohazardsncp18 trip! An earthquake off the shores of Ibaraki prefecture gave us a shock. This map shows how the earthquake loses… instagram.com/p/BnVHOukl1u8/…

Slept through an earthquake this morning! Surprised I didn’t feel a thing whilst sleeping!An #earthquake & a typhoon in the span of 12h!#Japan is indeed the place to learn about #naturaldisasters & #geohazards. #GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience @ANU_CPAS #TyphoonJebi pic.twitter.com/x7UWecCXG4

Prof. Kenji Satake on Tsunami

Hannah Griffiths @ncpjapan_hannah

Had our last lecture at #aori about tsunamis and earthquakes. This was really interesting to learn about as many of us were woken up by an earthquake around 5 this morning! #geohazardsncp18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience @ourANU @ANU_CPAS @dfat @NewColomboPlan pic.twitter.com/Pf7iqlf85x

Learning about the JMA tsunami & earthquake warning system. Being located on a dynamic tectonic boundary, Japan is very susceptible to geological hazards, so effective science communication is key! 🌊👍🏻 #GeoHazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience @ANU_CPAS @NewColomboPlan pic.twitter.com/haYEXtcDGh

Prof. Satake also talked abt the history of #tsunamiwarning 🌊 ⚠️& the aim to ever shorten warning times. Remembered how I watched the news abt the #2003IndianOceanTsunami as a kid & wanted to work in tsunami warning when I grew up #GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience pic.twitter.com/An6LSQoy2h

After this morning’s quake, it was timely that we had Prof. Kenji Satake’s lecture on #tsunami Was greatly anticipating this lecture as it’s a valuable opportunity to learn about the #JapanTripleDisaster from a local expert! #GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/tf3qwB5Pfa

Especially liked how Prof. Satake linked the #2011tsunami to one in 1896 & another in 869,& how the 2011 one had elements of the@two earlier ones.Using historical cases might be useful in getting people interested in #tsunamiscience!!!#GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience pic.twitter.com/BsEkDdLrvG

Had an excellent time listening to Prof. Kenji Satake’s lecture on tsunamis and earthquakes. Japan’s response time to disseminating tsunami warnings to the public are >3 minutes! That’s faster than the time it takes me to write a tweet! #GeohazardsNCP18 @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/0ohtZI7URE
