Hiyoriyama Hill in the Yuriage area

Luke @luke_hillsley

Absolute devastation in Natori after the 2011 tsunami. It's amazing how the Japanese can bounce back from such an event... truly inspirational. Below is an image of the aftermath & memorials that are there now ⛩ #geohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @UTokyo_News @ANU_CPAS @NewColomboPlan pic.twitter.com/1H4G0bv62R

Really hit home the absolute devastation that was felt in this area. The tsunami reached 9m & came 5km inland. 16,798 buildings were heavily damaged & there is little reconstruction yet. #geohazardsncp18 @ourANU @ANU_CPAS @anuearthscience @scienceANU @dfat pic.twitter.com/8jLywPZ4OI

In 2011, the original shrine atop the Hiyoriyama mount was destroyed along with the entire coastal town in Natori. As we read the names of the deceased and see the flattened town, we remember the tragic consequences of tsunamis. My heart breaks. #GeohazardsNCP18 @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/Zv1Rsos44G

A memorial and reminder. The seed, Tane-no-Ireihi, represents the will to overcome disaster. The sprout, Mebae-no-Tou, shows will overcomes the disaster. The tip reaches the height of the water during the 2011 tsunami, indicating safe areas for future tsunami’s #geohazardsncp18 pic.twitter.com/UddoM5VFcR

We got up close to a sea wall today. The original sea wall is the darker concrete. They added the new steps after the 2011 tsunami to make it higher. The sea wall runs all along the coastline #GeohazardsNCP18 @anuearthscience @scienceANU @dfat @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/pyIyX8UNSp

Actually here the first stop today in Yuriage area in Natori city, #Miyagi. This monument which reposes casualties by 2011 #Tsunami. I felt we should not only think about the past tragedy but also encourage ourselves to recover and walk toward the future. #GeohazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/AwU1MSk5xC

A very sombering visit to the Sendai Arahama area. A once vibrant town of 2000 people, it was devastated by a 13.9 metre wave during the 2011 tsunami. Today only the ruins of the elementary school remain, a memorial of the town and culture that once stood. #GeohazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/c5EsJaxpBg

Arahama school holds significance not only as a memorial for the earthquake and tsunami, but also to preserve the lives and culture of the town which also was destroyed in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. #GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @ANU_CPAS @dfat pic.twitter.com/95aB6LShan

Today we visited Arahama Elementary School in Sendai. The 2011 tsunami wiped out most of the city, but luckily the school survived. Here you can see a sign which indicates where the water came up to on the building #GeoHazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/s78nDZB5kc

Today we visited Arahama elementary school in #Sendai city, which now operates as a monumental facility that passes down what happened on March 11, 2011. However this place is more home to students here than one immersed in tragedy. #GeohazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/c3H29glHRY

Had an emotional day visiting Arahama and Nakahama elementary schools. The towns in which these schools were situated were completely destroyed. It was fascinating hearing first hand accounts from individuals who were present, made these events much more real #GeohazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/5czW5FSjri
