Boeing just put out an 8K SEC filing (a material event) stating that the MCAS software needs to be altered to address a "specific condition of flight, which the planned software changes do not presently address.” Looks likely to add a fresh delay to the 737 Max's return. pic.twitter.com/59nVwKU9nT

Speed trim, MCAS is part, uses single-channel command thread; no protection from CPU malfunction. Failures would be classic runaway, 3 sec. rule. 2nd proc. (on-side) doesn't stop malfunction command. Off-side FCC control is not involved, as far as I know. cnn.com/2019/06/26/pol…

2019-06-27 06:51:27
Peter Lemme @Satcom_Guru

Speed-trim has been in-service for 35 years without any reported incident involving CPU runaway. Runaways seen are hardware failures in the switching circuit or in the actuator. MCAS does not increase the failure rate from before, but it does increase trim rate in runaway.

2019-06-27 06:54:40
Peter Lemme @Satcom_Guru

any assertion that MCAS must have a dual processor (fail-passive) mandate would implicate Speed Trim and all 737 classic and 737 NG. There is no service history to suggest an imminent danger for Speed Trim processor failure.

2019-06-27 06:55:52
Peter Lemme @Satcom_Guru

I believe Boeing should have designed Speed Trim as a two channel system, using FCC Left and Right channels, back in 1984. There are aspects in autoland the could be reused, mostly a software exercise. In a perfect world! After all these years, it has been proven reliable enough.
