60年前のちょうど今頃、ホンダにとって初めてのGPチーム（左から右に鈴木義一、鈴木淳三、谷口尚巳、田中楨助）が東京のハネデア空港から1959年のマン島TTに向けて飛び立った。ここからこの歴史に残る出来事に関する重要な瞬間をいくつか切り取っていこう。

The Tokyo to London flight took 36 hours in a BOAC de Haviland Comet: Tokyo to Hong Kong to Bangkok to Calcutta to Karachi to Beirut to Frankfurt and London. Not surprised the riders look worried - the Comet had a bad accident record
2019-04-29 20:02:21東京からロンドンまでは英国海外航空のデハビランド・コメットで36時間。東京から香港、バンコク、カルカッタ、カラチ、ベイルート、フランクフルトを経由してようやくロンドンに到着する。ライダーたちが心配そうに見えるのも当然だ。当時コメットは事故の多さで有名だったのだ。
訳注
英国海外航空は現ブリティッシュ・エアウェイズ。そしてデハビランド・コメットは飛行機の名前。金属疲労による亀裂のせいで2度墜落しています。その教訓から今の飛行機の窓枠は亀裂ができないように角が丸くなっています。

A quick jump back in time in this thread on Honda's 1959 World Championship debut. Honda first learned the racing trade, like the other Japanese factories, in mostly off-road events (there weren't many roads in Japan then), like the Mount Fuji hill climb, Asama Plains race etc pic.twitter.com/R0JMnhxddP

ホンダは他の日本メーカーと同様にレースのやり方のやり方については、ほぼ未舗装路でのレースから学んでいる（当時はそれほど多くの舗装路がなかったのだ）。富士登山レースや浅間火山レースである。

ホンダの最初のレーサーは自分たちのことをホンダ・スピード・クラブ（HSC）と称していた。TT参戦の少し前、彼らは日本でジェフ・デュークの訪問を受けている。左から3人目がホンダに最初のGPポイントをもたらした谷口尚巳である。

訳注：原文では「アート東海」となってますが、おそらくアート商會とその後本田宗一郎が設立した東海精機がまざっちゃってますね。

この1959年のホンダマン島TT参戦スレッド。もう少し横道にお付き合いいただきたい。ホンダに最初のポイントをもたらした谷口尚巳はホンダのエンジン組み立て工場で働きながらレースをし、さらに映画のスタントまでこなしていた。この写真はバイク映画「火の女」に主演する「日本のマリリン・モンロー」、山本富士子のスタントに入る直前のものである。
訳注：火の女についてはこちらをご参照ください。私は見たこと無い（っつーか知らなかった）。

60年前の丁度今頃、ホンダ初のTTへのチームが36時間のフライトの後ロンドンに到着する。到着は夜だったのだが、翌朝彼らは目にしたものに驚くことになる。チームマネジャーの飯田が観光をスケジュールに押し込んでくれたのだ。写真はタワーブリッジ。
