I wasn't a fan of this "gatekeeping" thing before, but in recent years i've come to change my mind a little about it. Not because i think new ppl in a geek hobby is bad, but because i think integration of new ppl has completelly failed, and i explain: twitter.com/TheQuQu/status…

※ゲートキーピングとは直訳すると「門番」。
この場合は、同じ趣味の仲間としてコミュニティに入れるか否かを定める行為とする。

I've been on geek organizations and organizing/presenting Cons and events for almost 20 years. The objective always was to make "normies" realize that geek culture was more than what they thought. EJ: Anime was more than just the mainstream shonen of the time/

Games were more than just Super Marios for children; comics were more than just the most casual superhero ones, etc etc. Everything we did was focused on let ppl know all of the other more "advanced" material. Seinens, Joseis, RPGs with deep story, thought provoking comics, etc/
2020-01-28 09:17:1620年以上ギーク系組織、コンベンションの管理、プレゼンテーションに関わっていた。目的は「パンピー」にギーク/オタク文化は奴らが想像するもの以上であると気付かせる事だった。注目：アニメは現代のメインストリーム少年漫画物だけではない。ゲームは子供向けのスーパーマリオだけではない。アメコミもカジュアルなヒーローだけのものではない、その他色々。我々はもっとな「高尚な」ブツがあることを、気付かせたかった。青年、女性、ストーリーが深いRPG、考えさせる漫画、その他色々。

But decades later, that hasn't happened. We have A LOT more ppl who consume the hobby, BUT they almost only consume the super casual stuff. Ppl still don't read comics; they watch Marvel movies, which are a highly casualized version that longtime fans don't like as much/

Anime fans practically only watch a couple of anime that are super popular like MHA or KNY. Younger gamers seem to only play Fortnite. Etc etc. There aren't really THAT much people who deeply consume the less super popular products/
2020-01-28 09:17:17だが何十年後、それは起きなかった。今や我々のホビーを消費する人はすごく多くなった。だが、ほぼ全員がほぼ全部、超カジュアルな物だけしか消費しなかった。パンピーをアメコミは読まない。そのかわり、もう長い頃からファンから好まれない、超カジュアル化されたマーベルの映画をの方を見ている。アニメファンは実質的にヒロアカや鬼滅などの超ポピュラーなやつをいくつかしかみない。若い方のゲーマーはFortniteしかプレイしてない、などなど。そこまでポピュラーじゃない物をディープに消費する人間はそこまで多くはない。

So what's happening is these new ppl, instead of doing like we always did; go into a hobby for what it is, because that's what you like about it; they go into a hobby just because it's popular, and then demand it changes for them, fucking up every fan in the process/

Add to that the ppl who demand change for ideological purposes, to control narratives, or to win money, and really it seems that spending decades trying to get this hobbies popular kind of backfired/
2020-01-28 09:17:17つまり新入りが何をやっているのかと言うと、我らのようにそのホビーが好きだからそのホビーに入るのではなく、そのホビーが話題だから入り、改変を要求し、その過程で全ファン達がやられると言うこと。そこに「話」を操るために、または金を手に入れるために思想的な理由で改変を要求する人間が入ると、このホビーをポピュラーにする何十年もの努力がまさに逆発、仇にになってしまったともいえる。

Ofc this is not an excuse to kick honest ppl away or something, but maybe when ppl go in demanding changes while showing little to no knowledge of the hobby is a good moment to tell them to fuck off.

Idk, maybe you would understand me if you were as tired as me that at Cons is almost impossible that a console can have a game that's not Fortnite or Tekken for more than 5 minutes cause they'll change it instantly and don't even wanna hear about a new game they didn't play :p

Or how i've had to continuously lower the level of my Trivials cause at this point any question that's not "who's the protagonist of Naruto" is considered "too hard". (And i swear, 100%, i'm not exagerating here)
2020-01-28 09:17:18コンシューマ機でフォートナイトか鉄拳以外は、5分以上はチェンジなしでいられないし、プレイしたこと無いゲームに新作に興味ゼロなコンベンションに、俺同様疲れていたら、たぶん、俺の事を理解するだろうな。あるいはどれだけ俺のトリビアのレベルを下げざるを得ないかを分かれば・・・何故なら今では「Narutoの主人公は誰？」以外のトリビアが「難しすぎる」トリビアに入るのだから。
