@UnseenJapanSite The fact that simple tasks could get remarkably complicated. Like asking for no onion on a burger, no plastic bag for groceries, or no straw on drinks. That kind of situations may get really awkward.

@AmbroiseVelvet @UnseenJapanSite Yes I was also surprised by the cold water for washing machine and having to pump the hot water from the bath to get hot water.

@UnseenJapanSite I think the biggest shock was classrooms without AC at the university when it's literally like 95-100 degrees outside in July. 😱 In fact, many schools still don't have AC. Only the newer buildings at my university had them.

@henyome @UnseenJapanSite piggybacking, no heat in schools in the winter, the classroom being 0 degrees C and everyone straightup putting blankets on their laps at their desks. 😂

@UnseenJapanSite I think the reluctance they show irt inviting people into their homes is what I found/still find the most surprising living here. My parents would regularly invite other adults and their families for dinners on the weekend etc, but I've only been inside 2 homes in 2 years 🤔

@UnseenJapanSite That all of the machines talk. The ATMs. Escalators. Trucks proclaiming "I'm about to turn left." The bath announcing it's ready. That was the only hint of "culture shock" i experienced in japan i think.
