このストライキはファストフード店で働く人々の権利向上を求めるニューヨークの団体「ファストフード・フォーワード（Fast Food Forward）」が主導した。マクドナルドのほかニューヨーク全域でウェンディーズ（Wendy's）、ケンタッキーフライドチキン（KFC）、バーガー・キング（Burger King）など約60店舗で従業員がストに参加したという。
ストの影響により、タイムズスクエア（Times Square）や5番街などの店舗では店長が自ら接客する事態となった。
ストの参加者らは、現在の時給7.25ドル（約710円）の最低賃金を約2倍の15ドル（約1470円）に引き上げることを求めた。ニューヨークのファストフード業界の平均時給は、約9ドル（約880円）だ。だがレストランの店員と異なり、ファストフード店の従業員は、客からのチップで収入を増やすことはできない。
世界でも最も物価の高いニューヨークで基本的な生活を維持するためには、最低でも15ドルの時給が必要だとファストフード・フォーワードは主張する。
29日正午までのスト参加者は推定で400人に上り、昨年11月に行われた同様のストの約2倍の規模となった。だが、ニューヨーク地区のファストフード店では約5万人の従業員が働いており、ストに参加したのはそのごく一部にとどまった
