In the afternoon we visited Fujisan (Mt. Fuji) #WorldHeritage Center. Did you know Mt. #Fuji is “cultural” heritage? For a long time some #Japanese people have worshipped the mountain because of its natural power and beauty. #GeoHazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/LPHm0Pn6gD

#富士山世界遺産センター 地形を再現した富士山の模型(宝永山もある)を中心とし、人々の富士信仰の歴史に関する展示物が並んでいる。 富士山は自然遺産ではなく「文化遺産」、というのも重要なポイント。#GeoHazardsNCP18 の印を残してきました @ANU_CPAS @anuearthscience pic.twitter.com/qbjMrDYqji

The Funatsu Tainai Tree Mold

Also visited Funatsu Tainai Lava Tree Mold that formed ~1000 years ago.Crawled through the narrow 70m tunnel that was a pilgrimage site⛩ during Japan’s Edo period (1600-1868) for those seeking to have children 👶 #GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/3fmXa9weVy

Tree molds form when a tree is surrounded by flowing lava. As the tree burns away, it leaves behind a hollow tunnel, an example of which we explored today! #GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/xDmHqcMIVp

Entering the Funatsu Tainai Lava tree molds. These are created when lava envelopes a living tree, burning it away and leaving a hollow space with a tree imprint. These molds are important for religious reasons providing safe passage to mt fuji & a safe pregnancy #GeohazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/cCIfcfGEBG

Today we got to crawl through the Funatsu Tainai Lava Tree Molds - a rare geological phenomenon in Japan. The cave was formed over 1000yrs ago when trees were enveloped by lava, burning them to create a hollow space. You don’t see that everyday! #GeohazardsNCP18 @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/bEKonnwN3z

You can find tree molds around Mt. Fuji, which were made when trees were burned by #lava flow. Some were used as religious places. It’s so narrow then adventurous to go through but it’s worth visiting once in your life! #GeoHazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/ITFTKKhJTK
