(Feeling a little emotional because we finish our four-year African American military museum exhibit project tomorrow. So honored to have spent time finding stories, archival material and photos, much of which was erased/lost for almost 100 years.) pic.twitter.com/toCbxlfleT

'The 369th Infantry Regiment...was an infantry regiment of the New York Army National Guard during World War I and World War II. ...was known for being one of the first African-American regiments to serve with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I."

"During World War I, the 369th spent 191 days in frontline trenches, more than any other American unit. They also suffered the most losses of any American regiment, with 1,500 casualties."

This is one of my very favorites from WWI. Can't find a source/attribution, so I couldn't use it in our exhibit. I love looking at the faces in these old photographs. Thinking about what they witnessed. About courage, friendship, camaraderie, the brotherhood of military service. pic.twitter.com/ZdPZrqvSWK

Someone at the National Archives researched the names and histories of each one of the Croix de Guerre honorees. So many names and stories have been lost. It's incredible to read more about their lives! Really wish we did more of this kind of sleuthing. …ring-black-history.blogs.archives.gov/2017/11/07/and…

At least two became chauffeurs, one worked as a butler, and one became an elevator operator. Imagine being awarded a medal for acts of heroism involving combat with the enemy in the trenches of WWI...and then returning home to racial prejudice and scarce employment opportunities.

Worse yet, the heroism of black soldiers, the parades, the wearing of uniforms, the job pressures, fears about socialism, etc. led to angry whites lynching black veterans and committing mob violence against black communities. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-A… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Summer

African American soldiers suffered immense casualties and served with honor. The next couple of years had some of the worst white supremacist violence in US history, including the Tulsa Race Massacre, where 35 square blocks of a black neighborhood were burnt down.

It's no longer 1919. The military was integrated in 1948 with Executive Order 9981. In 2015, President Obama awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor to Private Henry Johnson of the 369th. (NY National Guard commander accepting on his behalf.) pic.twitter.com/QgAzik6NGF

The struggle for dignity and truth never ends. In 2021, some still use false moral panics and fear as pretext. In the same state where the Tulsa massacre occurred, lawmakers are attempting to prevent teachers from teaching students accurate US history: twitter.com/JeffreyASachs/…

@PENamerica A new bill in Oklahoma (also prefiled last week) explicitly *requires* teachers and university professors to lie to their students about American history. I'm not making this up! webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us/cf_pdf/2021-22… pic.twitter.com/6pxQKNIXlb

Closing with two favorite group photos: 1) 25th Infantry in 1890 2) 369th returning in February 1919 (same group/time/place as photo in fourth tweet) Look closer. @mariachong There was an African American unit that was the first to reach one of the camps. A searing account from many angles. Thought too if the Tuskegee Airmen. Mitchell squadrons in the Italy front ended up trying to request the Red Tail Mustangs as escorts. They didn’t lose …

@mariachong … an aircraft to German fighters; they just did their defensive job. Other units would perform pursuit to gain kills and leave them more exposed.

Following the Civil War, legislation passed to reorganize the military. This historic law called for the formation of 2 African-American regiments, known as the Buffalo Soldiers.
