This follows days of clashes between the anti-Coup coalition and the junta along the Asia Highway between Kawkareik and Myawaddy since Oct 18th. But Friday, troops of the KNLA, a KNLA splinter group and affiliated PDF groups launched a major offensive on key nodes in the city. /2

The attack centred on Junta checkpoints along the Asia Highway, the Township administration office, the District Police station and the District jail. All of which were successfully attacked. Junta troops withdrew from a base near the Asia Highway at around 11am. /3

This has effectively cut Kawkareik off, with the surrounding countryside largely being controlled by the anti-Coup coalition. Sources within the KNU stated that the main purpose of the attack was to destroy the junta's administrative capacity within the township. /4

In the attack, around 20 junta troops were confirmed killed by the resistance groups and several were captured. Resistance groups also claimed that the prison, mostly containing captured resistance fighters and detained protesters, was overrun and political prisoners released. /5

In response to the attack, the junta launched ~20 airstrikes on the town, and around 120 mortars, killing civilians and damaging a monestary. Additionally, the city contains the base of the Junta's 97th Light Infantry Battalion. Although the base is reportedly being attacked, it is unlikely that anti-coup troops would be able to capture that location within the town. /7

Following the destruction of the attack targets, anti-coup forces have reportedly withdrawn to the outskirts of the town, and are still clearing Junta positions in the countryside. There were no casualties among the anti-coup coalition. /8

Although these troops are not yet able to capture and hold urban territory controlled by the Junta, this attack shows a significant shift towards offensive campaigns to systematically degrade the junta within these urban areas (vs ad hoc attacks). /9

Statements also suggest that they are looking to not just capture but hold the outskirts and surroundings of the town, which displays their confidence to withstand a likely major junta attack, and their success in raiding junta targets within the town will add pressure. /10

Additionally, these attacks show the expanding geographic nature, forcing Junta forces in previously securely-held areas of the country to defend against major and coordinated offensive actions against them, not just here but in the rest of Karen, Karenni, Chin, Kachin ect. 11/11
