One of the tallest women in history, Anna Haining Bates, stood at 7 feet 11 inches (241 cm) in height. In the 1870s, she posed for a photograph with her husband, Martin Van Buren Bates, who was 7 feet 8 inches (234 cm) tall. Anna was born to Scottish parents of average height and weighed 16 pounds (7.26 kg) at birth. She had 12 other siblings, all of average height. When Anna was 6 years old, she had already reached a height of 5 feet 2 inches (157 cm), almost as tall as her mother. By the time she turned 10, she was 6 feet tall (183 cm), and on her 15th birthday, she measured 7 feet (213 cm). Her full height was achieved by the time she turned 18. Anna was a precocious child, excelling in literature, music, acting, and singing. She even played the piano and once portrayed Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth (c. 1603 - 1607). She met her future husband at a circus in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she was instantly hired by a promoter. The couple toured together and eventually fell in love, marrying in London in 1871. Anna gave birth to two children, both of whom tragically passed away at birth. Her son survived for only 11 hours and was the largest newborn ever recorded, weighing 23 pounds 9 ounces (10.7 kg) and measuring 30 inches (76 cm) in height. Sadly, Anna herself passed away in 1888 at the age of 42 from sudden heart failure. It's worth noting that Anna, despite her remarkable height, wasn't the tallest woman in history. There were three other women recorded with heights of at least 8 feet (244 cm). One of them was Triintie Cornelisdochter Keever, also known as De Groote Meid (The Big Girl), a Dutch woman who lived from 1616 to 1633 and is considered the tallest woman of all time, standing at a remarkable height of 8 feet 4 inches (254 cm).
