First view of Fujisan! So excited to be able to see such a magnificent natural and cultural icon 🗻🌸 the #geohazardsncp18 team is super excited to be able to explore the geological history of this mountain #anuearthscience #anu_science pic.twitter.com/2kcrU5d3PQ

About to climb part way up Mt Fuji. Did you know that Mount Fuji is actually composed of four mountains? Today we are going up Mt Hoei. We even got to see Fuji-san between the clouds on our way up 😁🗻🇯🇵 #GeoHazardsNCP18 @ANU_CPAS @anuearthscience pic.twitter.com/3eNzcWYix0

First glances of Mt Fuji! Excited for another day learning about the geology and culture of this amazing area as we climb up to Hoei crater! 🗻🇯🇵⛰ #geohazardsncp18 #culture #geology @anuearthscience @NewColomboPlan @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/srl1Nzb2xN

Climbing up Mt. Hoei!

Georgia Elliott @GElliott248

The volcanic landscape of Mt Hoei was spectacular! The volcanic rock had a very interesting texture and many different colours. The landscape above the trees had few plants but those that were there was so vibrant! 🌋🍁#geohazardsncp18 #beautifulnature @anuearthscience pic.twitter.com/mvEbeqfxvv

Today we climbed to the summit of Mt Hoei, exploring the basalt craters made in Fujisan’s 1707 eruption 🌋 Throughout the trail there are signs of multiple eruptions from the lava layering. A tough climb but the #geohazardsncp18 team and Squashy McSquashface loved the view pic.twitter.com/XiTPCHRVOj

After a deceptively hard hike, we made it to the summit of Mt Hoei. All around is evidence of past eruptions and lava flows. We passed the vegetation zone where plants stop growing & is a sacred place for the afterlife. #GeoHazardsNCP18 @dfat @anuearthscience @scienceANU pic.twitter.com/t8z2bbdPdd

At an elevation of 2,693 metres, Mt Hōei is home to some amazing geology, volcanism and cultural significance. Safe to say our feet are incredibly sore however it was definitely worth the hike! 🗻🗾🎌 #GeoHazardsNCP18 @ANU_CPAS @anuearthscience @scienceANU @NewColomboPlan #Hōei pic.twitter.com/AFsn73yIqa

Volcanic soil is extremely fertile because it is rich with minerals that help plants to thrive. This is why the lower areas of Mt Fuji & Mt Hōei are abundant with greenery as a result of past lava flows 🍃🌱🌿 #GeoHazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @ANU_CPAS @anuearthscience @UTokyo_News pic.twitter.com/wkRmUMLYw4

Just when we reached the top of the Mt Hoei crater, this news article came in! Really impressed by how #disasterplanning is given the governmental attention & funding it needs! #GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/3S6wI06pSA

Made the ascent up Mt Hoei today with this amazing bunch (sorry to those not pictured)! Hoei is made up of 3 craters formed after a violent eruption in 1708, no lava or pyroclastic flows occurred but huge amounts of pumice and scoria were produced. #GeoHazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/k7ltPSwjDJ

On top of the clouds 😍 When you’re standing on the summit and looking at the horizon, it’s easy to see why so many people worship Mount Fuji. #GeoHazardsNCP18 @NewColomboPlan @anuearthscience @ANU_CPAS @AnthropologyAnu pic.twitter.com/tLNH0XuENb

geologistsにとってexcitingな日でした。写真は宝永山に登る途中観察したもの。外側が急冷された内部構造、柔らかいまま飛んできて先端が曲がった火山弾、トップの方に見える岩脈。雲海がとても綺麗でした。 @ANU_CPAS @anuearthscience #GeohazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/VvKkEs8pzy

Arai Checkpoint (Arai-Sekisho)

Kate T @KateTNCP

The Arai Sekisyo was once a checkpoint for travellers. It was moved & rebuilt 3 times due to typhoon, earthquake & tsunami. 100s of years later, mitigation & recovery strategies are still at the centre of managing these hazards #GeoHazardsNCP18 pic.twitter.com/cnFsSmNqrn

The Arai checkpoint had to be moved and reconstructed twice over 7 years after #tsunamis in 1699 & 1707, and again after the Ansei-Tōkai earthquake in 1864. This reinforces the importance of #location when you buy a home 🏡 !#GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/MYiz1Yeb2R

Dropped by Arai Checkpoint which served as as a security toll during the Edo period. It controlled the movement of women in & out of Edo(modern day Tokyo) as well as preventing the smuggling of weapons! #GeohazardsNCP18 @scienceANU @anuearthscience @ANU_CPAS pic.twitter.com/5MrzgliV3V
