There's been a a lot of recent discussion about 'kick out' switches (or as @ZachLowe_NBA calls them - 'scram' switches) in the NBA. That is, teams switching off the ball to protect their guards from being exposed inside on a mismatch. How does it work? Check out this thread. pic.twitter.com/8APeUIYUSS

The easiest way to 'kick out' the 'small' is when the O runs "Roll & Replace" action after the PNR. That is, they lift the opposite big high as the roller dives to the basket. This means the small only has to move a short distance to be 'kicked out'. See here from @paobcgr pic.twitter.com/Cggzw2BsVp

Here's another example of the 'kick out' occurring during 'Roll & replace' type action from one of the best teams in the NBA to execute 'kick outs' - @celtics. In this clip, @KyrieIrving is kicked out by @jaytatum0 to Siakam as he replaces high after the PNR. pic.twitter.com/sPCU1yrR7t

So what happens if the weak side big doesnt replace high after the PNR? Where does the small go then? Here is an example from @EuroLeague team, @FBBasketbol, where they kick the small out weak side. NB - Kick outs are also called "3 way" or "triple" switching in Europe hoops. pic.twitter.com/IImQXkVVPj

Here's another clip of the small being kicked out weakside (by @utahjazz). After the Side PNR the ball is passed back to the top for a Mid PNR. @daanteee switches on to the big and is eventually 'kicked out' by @JonasJerebko. You can hear him yell 'Get out, Get out' as he does it pic.twitter.com/WvszdAZ0ai

How does it work with open side PNRs? As well as the Warriors example given at the start of the thread, here is clip from @BasketballCL team, @UCAMMurcia. You can see the small is able to seamlessly pass the roller off to the weakside D big who is stationed on the split line. pic.twitter.com/RRATsWH4rk

The player who 'kicks out' the guard doesnt have to be a 'big'. It just needs to be a 'bigger' player than the small. A small forward can kick out the guard if it he is in the vicinity to do so. This can occur in Slot PNRs when the corner is filled. See here by @olympiacosbc pic.twitter.com/pNnRSNbt8C

Here's an example of a forward kicking out the guard. This time from the @utahjazz. In this example, its a Mid PNR which is switched by Rubio and Gobert. Jae Crowder, who is more of forward than a traditional 'big', sees the switch and 'kicks out' Rubio to his matchup (Barnes) pic.twitter.com/AAZ13mheIn

I wrote about the @HoustonRockets use of 'kick outs' in last year's playoffs to protect Chris Paul from being exploited inside on @cleantheglass. They used it with both on ball AND off ball screening situations. Give it a read here: cleaningtheglass.com/in-flight-adju… @bencfalk

Good thread here from @coachliamflynn on the kickout switch. Naturally as the kickout switch becomes more prevalent there must be a counter to attack these switches. twitter.com/coachliamflynn…

This is one good example to counter it. Here Trez kicks Lou Williams out when Dirk tries to post him, but Powell makes a ghost cut to the rim as soon as Trez leaves him rather than allowing the Clippers to dictate defensively. Now Mavs gets another mismatch they can attack. pic.twitter.com/cCYNlvIp47
