A Pick and Roll defence that has become increasingly popular in the @ACBCOM is what I call the "Jump Switch". Teams using this tactic will mix up their coverage at the point of screen (last clip it was a 'contact' show, this clip its a 'drop') but still use the same aggressive 'jump switch' technqiue as the ball is driven off the pick. Sometimes teams involve a third defender in the 'jump switch' so it becomes a full rotation. See this example from @OBRADOIROCAB. Again we see a 'quick show' at the point of the screen, a hard 'jump switch' from the 'nail' defender, but this time a rotation from a third defender. pic.twitter.com/eKII4ZEfHq

Why use this tactic? 1) it allows screener's D to stay attached to roller so their is no pass for a dunk & no need for weakside tags (opening up the 3pt shot) 2) When D 'jump switches' aggressively at the right angle, and with a guard chasing from behind, its tough to 'pass on'. pic.twitter.com/NhWNniht2Q

Would be interesting if an NBA team would use this tactic vs Harden. 'Jump switching' to help on penetration is something I've seen in the NBA (see this example of the @celtics jump switching this slot drive). Just haven't seen it in when there is a PNR involved. pic.twitter.com/p5yweyTYOY

So what are the problems with this style of defence? First up, if the 'nail' defender isn't in place to 'jump switch' hard you can give up a layup right down the middle of the floor as the screener's D is staying glued to his player and not offering help. See here: pic.twitter.com/hFejrh7D6I

Secondly, the Jump Switch has to be EARLY, AGGRESIVE and at a STEEP angle (so that they have their full body in the passing lane). If it comes at a 'shallow' or 'flat' angle, the 'pass on' is too easy. See here. (NB, the third weak side defender also has to be ready to rotate!) pic.twitter.com/pwD6fFWRTi

How do teams beat the 'Jump switch'? One method is to use "Cut & Flare" action. The "flare" makes the 'Jump Switch' a longer rotation (both to the ball and recovering back). The 'cut' takes out the jump switchers 'buddy' (third defender) who is there to stunt/rotate if needed pic.twitter.com/ntZPgiwlXF

Here's another example of the "cut & flare" tactic against the jump switch. Again you see how the tactic both confuses the defence and stretches the recovery for the ball defender to make after the 'Jump switch'. pic.twitter.com/xToUfdc28w

One last point, teams are also use the 'Jump Switch' with off ball screens. Here's @OBRADOIROCAB using it to take away a cutter's advantage he created off a stagger screen.
