I’m about to lose my freakin mind. Grading papers and I keep asking myself why do my students keep putting Golden Week in quotations? And why do they keep writing “I was excited at the scenery” BECAUSE IT’S IN THEIR FREAKIN BOOKS THAT WAY!!!!! pic.twitter.com/AVbP4lOt3c
2019-06-12 11:42:49I’ve never been anywhere and said “Boy I’m so excited at the scenery!” I’m setting my books on fire.
2019-06-12 11:44:57@Higgins82 Nothing wrong in principle in putting GW in quotation marks. When writing in English it’s assumed that you’re writing to an English native who doesn’t know what ‘Golden Week’ is.
2019-06-12 11:48:42@Peckitt What did you do for “Easter”? How was your “Christmas”? Where are you going for “Spring Break”?
2019-06-12 12:44:55@Higgins82 It would make sense in a statement like this: The period of time when Christians mark the death and resurrection of Christ is referred to as the “Easter” holiday.
2019-06-12 13:46:50@Peckitt That’s fine. But if you’re just telling someone about Golden Week it’s not necessary. Otherwise it looks like you’re being sarcastic or it’s not actually called Golden Week.
2019-06-12 13:53:22@Higgins82 @rallat In some shops they also have signs with ‘Our staff can speak “English”’. In a way I guess it’s true because they speak “English” and not English 😅
2019-06-12 19:31:41@lluisgerard @rallat Haha it’s a version of English...somewhere
2019-06-12 20:23:34@DiloninJapan @JaponMeneATout Sunshine. We don’t use new horizon here. I used that a few years ago in a different town.
2019-06-13 08:41:55@Higgins82 @JaponMeneATout Ah Sunshine... Even worse on some case. I don't remember which of the 2 was using "there're" for "there are" and all JHS teacher unable to process that the Manual (capital, for them it is the Book) could be faulty. That's when I knew I should get out of teaching here...
2019-06-13 09:36:09@DiloninJapan @JaponMeneATout I’m gonna stick around...someone has to stress out about this stuff! Haha
2019-06-13 10:06:09@Higgins82 Sorry, but could you tell me why 'excited at' is unnatural? Is it because scenary is not something to be exciting? or because it's a grammatical error? I'm so curious.
2019-06-13 10:07:13@furiko_dearu You can be excited for something or excited to see something (in this case the scenery) but being excited “at” the scenery...it’s missing a noun. You can’t be excited “at” the noun but you can be excited by the noun. eow.alc.co.jp/sp/search.html…
2019-06-13 10:41:36@Higgins82 @furiko_dearu You can be excited /for/ Golden Week. You can also be excited /at/ the thought of going somewhere fun during Golden Week.
2019-06-13 12:17:39@Higgins82 Look at you concerned with English. Do the Japanese seem bothered sir????? No! Have a nice day lolololol
2019-06-13 13:10:52@DrePigglesworth Hahaha I’m a rare ALT. I’m one of those weirdos that went to school to become a teacher in a foreign country. And some of them do care...somewhere.
2019-06-13 13:25:24@Higgins82 Bruh trust me. When you have to be undoing what teachers are doing. Whew! I don't see the public school books only heard stories which you confirmed oooooo lol
2019-06-13 13:39:18@DrePigglesworth If the teacher is willing to work to fix it it’s fine. I’ve had teacher’s come to me and say “hey this is crap let’s not do it”. Then there are others that simply just don’t know it’s wrong and teach it anyway.
2019-06-13 13:40:46This cracked me up. But seriously, this kind of thing is enraging. 😤We come here to teach correct English and have to deal with this. I want to hire this guy! My school uses Oxford text books- not this crap. twitter.com/Higgins82/stat…
2019-06-13 18:46:22@AmericanT_Laura At some point you have to laugh about it. But I also don’t feel bad about pointing out the errors. It’s my job! And summer break is coming soon. I won’t have to stress too much longer haha.
2019-06-13 19:10:00@AmericanT_Laura 'at the scenery' に違和感があるのはわかりますが、あんまりピンとこない(>_<) まだまだ勉強足りないです。
2019-06-13 19:35:53@AmericanT_Laura So could you tell us what’s the correct way of saying instead of “I was excited at the scenery”? What’s wrong with it? Sorry, I have no idea.(T . T)
