At first glance, the so-called Spanish Donkey may not seem menacing. But take a closer look. It was shaped like a pommel horse in gymnastics, but with a pointed triangular edge facing upwards. This device’s shape ensured that its victims received a gruesomely agonizing experience. The offender would be stripped of all of their clothes and then made to straddle what was essentially a triangular piece of metal with a board placed over it to form a sawhorse-type shape. Often, the victim would then have restraints or weights tied to their ankles in order to make the experience even more painful. Depending on how long a victim was made to sit on the Spanish Donkey, they could experience anything from intense discomfort to agonizing pain to disfigurement and death.

色紙の第３弾。 手塚治虫、赤塚不二夫、村野守美、長谷川法世の各先生方です。 　手塚先生の色紙は、1967年１月、池袋西武で公開スタジオが開かれていたときのサイン会でいただきました。私は高校２年生。静岡から１ヶ月置きくらいに上京しては、マンガ家の先生のお宅や出版社（虫プロ商事）、新宿のマンガ喫茶コボタンなどをまわっていました。 　赤塚不二夫先生の色紙は、コビト製菓のチョコか何かのクーポンを貯めて送ってもらったもの。絵は印刷で、サインだけ直筆です。やはり67年くらいかな？ 　村野守美先生とは、よく麻雀をしていて、そのついでに色紙を描いていただきました。76～77年くらいですね。 　長谷川法世さんは、編集プロ勤務時代に知り合い、ときどき仕事場に遊びに行ってました。『博多っ子純情』誕生の少し前、劇画タッチの作品を描いていた頃のものです。こちらは75年くらいかな。

Is this the very first meme ever? This comic strip from the University of Iowa's satirical magazine, The Judge, dates back to 1921. Within The Judge, the comic was credited to a different magazine called the Wisconsin Octopus, which was published between 1919 and 1959 at the University of Wisconsin. In one particular edition of the Wisconsin Octopus that was published in 1919 or 1920, another comic (second photo) can be found in the same "expectations vs reality" format. The word "meme" was first coined by English ethologist and evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins, in his book The Selfish Gene (1976). According to Dawkins, memes are "ideas that spread from brain to brain".
