There's also Château de Gudanes, a castle built in the 13th century. It is nestled in the French Pyrenees. Lately, Château de Gudanes has become a symbol of preservation and restoration efforts in France. It currently has features that are characteristic of the neoclassical architectural style prevalent in the 18th century...
2024-01-27 03:17:30@Culture_Crit No doubt that Chateau de Pierrefonds is amongst the most breathtaking. It showcases some of the best medieval architecture, originally being built in the 1300s. pic.twitter.com/nEn6TODUvj
2024-01-27 02:16:35@Culture_Crit Ok, just so you know. Châteaux with a X, not a S. Yeh, i know, plural in french is with a S but not always. Because it’s french.
2024-01-27 07:55:24@Culture_Crit Notice how many of them are placed on bluffs to overlook rivers. A relic of France’s history of river-based Viking invasions, and a statement of how important securing those routes were for medieval magnates. pic.twitter.com/6uPfYawEFr
2024-01-27 02:23:29Beautiful thread! The Renaissance châteaux of the Loire Valley, such as Chambord and Chenonceau, were architectural marvels as well as centers of intellectual and cultural activity. They hosted significant figures of the arts, literature, and philosophy, playing a crucial role in the cultural and intellectual renaissance of France.
2024-01-27 02:37:37@Culture_Crit Château de Montreuil-Bellay, a well-preserved medieval historical site with a beautiful setting along the Thouet River. I’m adding that to your list just for the turrets. 🏰 pic.twitter.com/eSVJCgEU1H

2024-01-27 16:49:04The number of castles in France is estimated to be about 45,000, a bit more than 1 for France's 36,000 communities. De Dordogne, or the Périgord, as it was called in the Middle Ages, is also named 'the land of 1001 castles'. This area has no less than 1500 castles, mansions, and fortresses from different periods and in different architectural styles. x.com/entertainmehq/…
2024-01-27 02:17:05@Culture_Crit I believe Château d'If was the place the main character from the Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantes was imprisoned in. Fascinating book from Alexandre Dumas. Was it really used as a prison IRL back in the day?
2024-01-27 02:13:35@Culture_Crit Of course, Versailles is the most famous! This is the statue of King Louis XIV in front of Versailles (own photo): pic.twitter.com/UGH19HnI4B

2024-01-27 16:44:45@Culture_Crit Pierrefonds was mostly destroyed by Louis XIII in 1617 and rebuild by Napoleon III in 1857. Viollet-LeDuc built that fantasy castle. As he did with Notre-Dame. pic.twitter.com/pvYn1Od63C
2024-01-27 11:07:32youtu.be/amNS81KH7XM The Château de Pierrefonds includes most of the characteristics of defensive military architecture from the Middle Ages, though it underwent a major restoration in the 19th century. The castle remained a ruin for more than two centuries. Napoleon I bought it in 1810. During the 19th century, with the rediscovery of the architectural heritage of the Middle Ages, it became a "romantic ruin": in August 1832, Louis-Philippe gave a banquet there on the occasion of the marriage of his daughter Louise of Orléans to Léopold de Saxe-Cobourg Gotha, first king of the Belgians. Among other artists, Corot depicted the ruins in several works between 1834 and 1866. The Château de Pierrefonds has been classified as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture since 1848.
