Historic hearings - UN will examine the legality of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories On Monday, the UN's highest court will begin a "historic hearing" on the legality of Israel's 57-year occupation of Palestinian territories, the Associated Press reports. Although the case opens against the backdrop of the war between Israel and Hamas, it focuses on Israel's "indefinite control over the occupied West Bank, Gaza Strip and annexed East Jerusalem." The court is expected to examine the legal consequences of Israeli actions in the Palestinian territories since 1967. The occupation, which Israel itself attributes to security measures, goes far beyond defensive measures, Palestinians and leading human rights groups say. The Palestinian legal team accuses Israel of violating not only the ban on territorial conquest by annexing large swaths of land, but also the Palestinians' right to self-determination, and introducing a system of racial discrimination and apartheid. As the publication reports, representatives of more than 50 countries and three international organizations will appear before the court. Israel itself does not plan to speak at the hearings.
