Tourism is THE single most successful economic policy that Japan has had in the past decade and drives not just the economy in Tokyo, but props up regions across the country. If numbers drop today it could be the biggest since the impact of Fukushima faded.

Those two year-on-year dips you see in the chart are - Jan. 2013, when China/Japan relations were near their most strained over territorial disputes; and Sept. 2018 when Typhoon Jebi shut down Kansai airport for weeks and a quake in Hokkaido knocked power out for the whole island

UPDATE: while the number of South Koreans did drop, it was only by 7.6%. Overall tourist numbers were up 5.6% on a fresh surge in Chinese visitors. Perhaps we'll see more impact next month.

@Matt_Alt The JNTO data doesn't break that down, although overall Japan departures were up for the month by 3.7%. Will need to see the corresponding Korean data I think.

あさチャンで、先月の韓国人観光客40%減で大騒ぎ、外国人観光客全体では数%である。それに、外国人観光客の目安になる世界経済の低迷とか、為替の問題、天候とかあると考えるべきである。韓国の左派政権の経済失政も大きな原因である。日本人観光客の訪韓の動向はどうなのだろうか。

長崎県対馬が韓国に乗っ取られると多くの人が心配していた。近年、対馬に新たにできた宿泊施設・食堂・免税店・釣具店の大部分が韓国人が投資した施設である。自衛隊施設周辺までが韓国人に買われている。韓国人観光客が少なくなってこれらの問題が解消されると、なぜマスコミは言わないのか。 pic.twitter.com/bvofkJ0Lp1
