3/10 It turned out that the validator Winter Validator was spamming the network. We had to block it, but the problem persisted. Some people were just saying it was late and that it’s better to go to sleep and wake up to a fixed blockchain.

4/10 By 3:20 AM today we decided to quit the fray and re-launch with snapshots from block 153139220 and confirmed that it would be wiser to stay on version 1.10.30 rather than go with 1.13.1 as some validators suggested earlier. @knox_trades pic.twitter.com/cBk2j1xxEK

5/10 So, we were among the first to start re-launching + we made our snapshots publicly available. Overall, 6.73 TB of snapshots was downloaded from us, i.e. 192 times 35 Gb (which is the weight of the snapshot). The speed was over 800 MiB. pic.twitter.com/D93k83HgaF

6/10 By 8:55 AM EEST we finally had the consensus with 80% of the staking power. So the network went back online and everything was fine again.

7/10 There are several valuable lessons here. First of all, sadly, some validators were just unavailable at the most critical time. Guys, you would better monitor the network 24/7 like our DevOps. Things don’t necessarily go smooth every time.

8/10 The second lesson is for the community. While professional validators may be seen as divulging from the ideals of decentralization, it is they who can put the network back together if something goes wrong. So maybe there should be more support from the community.

9/10 Anyway, now the network is back on its feet, so all’s well that ends well. But we shouldn’t let this experience just pass on and teach us nothing. We have drawn our conclusions. Hopefully, other validators would do that, too.
