9. Pause at regular intervals to review and consolidate At the end of each section, without looking at the text, try to summarize what the main points are. This is difficult at first but eventually you'll train your brain to encode information in a way that makes this easier.

10. Visualize while you're reading This is an advanced skill but well worth putting in the effort to master. Visualization of ideas as you're reading them helps increase your level of engagement, memory and comprehension.

Here's one more bonus tip: 11. Don't wait until you're perfect to use these ideas in your every day life. You can start using them immediately. Every time to you use them, you will get better.

@kareem_carr Speed reading is not real, please remove this post, as it contradicts years and years of reading science. wired.com/2017/01/make-r…
2023-08-02 02:54:00@jkdempc The article seems to define speed reading as reading 1000s of words per minute which I agree is impossible. As I made clear, I’m talking about extracting information relevant to the reader as quickly as possible. The article itself admits that reading at 2 to 3 times average… twitter.com/i/web/status/1… pic.twitter.com/JBRRDz6c7X
2023-08-02 04:11:50@kareem_carr I'd love to pick up this skill, for reading technical things, but still be able to read slowly (savor it, if you like) when the subject matter is right. Do you find that speed reading makes it difficult to enjoy, for example, poetry?
2023-08-02 04:15:41@TabascoStafford Yes. I read poetry at normal pace for enjoyment. I listen to podcasts at 1.5-2x speed and I notice my emotional reactions can’t keep up with the pace of information so the experience is emotionally flatter. It feels mentally efficient but more robotic. Same with reading.
2023-08-02 04:36:16@kareem_carr I struggle with subvocalisation in particular; It trips me up at times to the point where my own comprehension of what I've read disrupts the reading itself. It gets dramatically worse if I then try to read aloud to someone, as I have the same issue plus /actual/ vocalisation.
2023-08-02 06:57:31@discepto I'm not an expert but I think this a classic case of "not being able to see the forest for the trees". I would: 1. Double down on previewing the text 2. Focus on the big picture 3. Increase how frequently you review what you do (and don't understand). Make notes.
2023-08-02 07:13:42@kareem_carr i personally don't like the concept of speed reading but that's just me. this is a good post and i'm encouraged to try speed reading again.
2023-08-02 03:51:28@noobestjohn I wouldn’t speed read fiction books that I wanted to savor and enjoy. Math heavy books are also hard to speed read. But that’s why I say you should slow down for complicated or unfamiliar stuff.
2023-08-02 04:25:31@kareem_carr @kareem_carr : when I try to speed-read, it feels like work, not pleasure. Is it your experience that speed reading becomes less like work when you get better at it?
2023-08-02 03:12:43@thetofuavenger In my experience, it feels effortful like going for a run is effortful. It’s pleasurable in the sense that it’s nice when you feel like you’re doing something well. I make sure to take breaks. I have a timer and force myself to get up and take a 5 minute break every 30 minutes.
2023-08-02 04:16:56@kareem_carr I tried speed reading learning how to speed read. Can't recommend.
2023-08-02 03:18:03@Tirso46748709 I was actually inspired to write this thread by recently speed reading a book on speed reading. Sounds like I'm joking but I'm not lol. I generated a page of notes so I decided to turn it into this thread.
2023-08-02 05:57:07@kareem_carr Is the Harvard course available online ?
2023-08-02 07:34:08@SaavedraReisson Sorry. It’s not even available to Harvard people anymore. Used to just $25 and open to all students and staff. 😢
2023-08-02 07:41:24@kareem_carr Speed reading is the ability to sacrifice some comprehension + a ton of retention + virtually all immersion in exchange for at most 2x speed. Most of the time, it's a bad trade.
2023-08-02 02:41:31@imTolstoyevski Re: Immersion. I would generally not advice speed reading stuff you’re reading for pleasure. Several of these tips will boost comprehension by promoting the ability to extract meaning from text at high efficiency. Retention will be higher as well if you review regularly.
2023-08-02 03:54:39@kareem_carr I really enjoy your posts but your advice here is quite problematic. This paper summarizes the issues and is authored by some of the best scholars in the field: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…
