Bass Reeves (1838-1910) was the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. He apprehended nearly 3,000 outlaws during his career. Prior to becoming a legendary lawman of the Wild West, Reeves was an enslaved individual born in Arkansas. When the Civil War erupted, he was compelled to serve the Confederacy but managed to escape to Indian Territory (modern-day Oklahoma). Reeves swiftly adapted to his new surroundings, acquiring the customs and languages of the Seminole and Creek people. Following the war, Reeves returned to Arkansas as a free man. He settled down, married, and had 11 children. However, his tranquil family life came to an end when he was recruited to apprehend the increasing number of outlaws. In one notable arrest, Reeves disguised himself as a vagabond and walked approximately 30 miles to the home of two outlaws' mother. She welcomed him, provided food and shelter, and allowed him to stay the night. The next morning, Reeves apprehended both her sons and walked them back. The mother is said to have followed him for 3 miles, cursing his name. On another occasion, Reeves approached the Brunter Brothers, who were wanted for robbery and multiple murders. When questioned, Reeves calmly declared, "Well, I've come to arrest you," and then inquired about the date to record their arrest. The brothers laughed, and one of them reached for his pistol. Reeves grabbed the pistol barrel, and after three missed shots, he drew his .45 and incapacitated two of the brothers, striking the third on the head. Reeves' unyielding commitment to justice even led him to arrest his own son, Benjamin "Bennie" Reeves, accused of murdering his own wife. None of the other U.S. Marshals were willing to pursue Bennie, except for his father. Bennie received an 11-year prison sentence, which was eventually commuted, allowing him to live the remainder of his life as a law-abiding citizen. Reeves also pursued the minister who had baptized him as a child because he was involved in the illegal liquor trade. There is speculation that the character of the Lone Ranger may have been inspired by Reeves, as they share numerous similarities, such as wearing disguises, riding white and grey horses, possessing exceptional marksmanship and horsemanship skills, distributing silver keepsakes, and having a Native American partner.

For generations, the Lone Ranger has charged the imaginations of millions around the world with tales of western adventure and the pursuit of justice. But a number of historians now believe that the Lone Ranger was possibly based on a real person, an escaped Texas slave turned U.S. Marshal named Bass Reeves. Regardless of any possible link to the Lone Ranger stories of the twentieth century, the story of Reeves is as remarkable as any western legend. In his long career, he brought more than three thousand criminals to justice. He found himself in shootouts with several suspects but was never wounded himself. Judge Parker often praised Reeves and his skills. In 1893, Reeves returned to Texas to serve as U. S. Marshal for the federal district court in Paris. After 32 years as a federal law officer, he stepped down. Reeves served for two more years with the Muskogee Police Department in Oklahoma before retiring in 1909 at age 70. His health in decline, he passed away in January 1910.

Reeves was also known for his remarkable memory. He had an incredible ability to remember faces, names, and details about the individuals he encountered during his career. This photographic memory was a valuable asset in his line of work, as it allowed him to identify and track down wanted criminals even years after their crimes had been committed. He is believed to be one of the earliest African Americans to receive a commission as a deputy U.S. marshal west of the Mississippi River. Reeves worked for thirty-two years as a deputy marshal in the Indian Territory. He was the only deputy to begin with Parker's court and work until Oklahoma statehood in 1907.

Yasuke was the world’s first Black samurai. When a 6-foot-tall African slave landed in Japan, he stuck out like a sore thumb. People lost all modesty and nearly caused a stampede trying to get a closer look. Such a sight was so foreign in Kyoto. Yasuke was in the service of the Japanese warlord Nobunaga Oda for a while. His real name was "Yasufe" and hailed from the Makua tribe of Mozambique. He arrived in Japan in 1579 as a servant of the Italian Jesuit Alessandro Valignano. Alessandro had been appointed the Visitor (inspector) of the Jesuit missions to South and East Asia, an extremely high position. He accompanied Valignano when he came to the capital area in 1581 and caused something of a sensation. In one event, several people were crushed to death while clamouring to get a look at him, the black samurai. Nobunaga heard about him and expressed a desire to see him. He suspected the black color of his skin to be paint so he had him strip from the waist up and made him scrub his skin. Later that year, Yasuke accompanied a group of Jesuits on a short trip to the province of Echizen. Yasuke could speak some Japanese, Nobunaga was also impressed by his strength. At Nobunaga's request, Valignano left Yasuke with Nobunaga before Valignano left central Japan later that year. Nobunaga treated Yasuke with such great favor that people in Azuchi even said he would probably be made a 'tono' (lord). This did not happen, but he was given the position of samurai (shikan).
