The lower dungeon of Warwick Castle is an oubliette, a place where prisoners were cast and abandoned, often never to be remembered again. An oubliette, by definition, is a hidden dungeon accessible solely through a trapdoor in its ceiling. These were commonly found in medieval castles and served as a means of incarcerating a wide range of individuals, from political detainees to common thieves. These spaces were exceedingly small, dimly lit, and cramped chambers within a dungeon, offering no escape route due to their sole entrance/exit. The term "oubliette" finds its origins in the French word "oublie," which means "to forget." When prisoners were consigned to an oubliette, they were effectively left to be forgotten by the outside world.

The Leap Castle of Ireland built by the O'Bannon clan in 13th century. During renovation of the castle in the 1900s, workers found an oubliette behind a wall in the chapel. At the bottom of the shaft were many human skeletons amassed on wooden spikes. When cleaned out, it took three cartloads to remove the bones. Today, the dungeon is now covered over in order to keep people away from it. It is believed that the O'Carrolls would drop guests through the trap door to be impaled on the spikes 8 feet below. A pocket watch found at the same time, dating from the mid 1800s, shows how recently the oubliette may have been used.

Some oubliettes were dry pits, while others might contain water or even spikes at the bottom to injure or kill those dropped into them. Oubliettes were generally difficult to get into and out of, often requiring a rope or ladder that could be easily removed. Not every castle had an oubliette, but those that did often used them as a last-resort holding cell for particularly troublesome prisoners.
