Warwick Castle in Warwickshire, England was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror. The castle was originally a wooden fort, but was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century.  The castle's dungeons included an oubliette, which was a narrow passage that prisoners were forced to lie in. The oubliette was so narrow that prisoners couldn't sit or kneel. They were kept in complete darkness and starvation eventually led to their death.  The oubliette was a means of execution, rather than imprisonment. Prisoners were left there permanently. They had to live with the remains of the last person thrown in, as well as other things like dead animals and human waste.

I thought, with horror, of the people lowered into it and left to die. Left in the cold, the dark, with the vermin from previous occupants crawling over them. Listening to the soft squish every time they moved in the feces, muck, and debris. Trying to lick moisture from the damp walls. *shudder* I have a vivid imagination. Oubliettes weren’t dungeons, they were IN dungeons, often at the lowest point. This ensured that anything and everything drained into the hole. Some were simple straight shafts. Guards lowered a prisoner onto the shaft. There was no room to sit, or lie, or squat, and sometimes no room to even turn around. Not every prisoner was sentenced to the oubliette, the decision was strictly in the hands of the lord of the castle. Guards might or might not feed the incarcerated. No lawyer, no appeal, no prisoner’s rights. An oubliette might be vacant for years, or have a new victim stuffed in atop the rotting remains of the previous occupant. Now, a word of warning, some castles had shafts dug strictly for drainage and were never used as places of death. Folks imagine they are oubliettes.

@historyinmemes Some castles had really elaborate oubliettes with traps and tricks to make it even harder to escape. Can you imagine being stuck in a tiny, dark room with no way out? History is full of fascinating, and sometimes pretty dark, stories.

The oubliette in Warwick Castle, known as the lower dungeon, is a chilling reminder of the castle's dark past. This narrow cell is so confined that the victim had to remain lying in a prone position, unable to stand up. The access hatch consists of an iron grille, and even turning around or moving at all would be nearly impossible in this tiny chamber. Warwick Castle itself is steeped in history. First built at the behest of William the Conqueror in 1068, the castle has played a prominent role in history for over 11 centuries. Visitors can immerse themselves in over 1100 years of jaw-dropping history at this Grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument. The castle was home to the Earls of Warwick since 1088 when Henry de Beaumont was made the first Earl of Warwick. The title passed through several families until it surrendered to the crown and was granted to John Dudley in 1547. The castle was held for Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War under Robert Greville whose family held the castle until 1978 when it was sold to Tussauds Group. Today, the castle's current owners are Merlin Entertainments.
