@1goodtern No but I have now 😀 I’m always a bit sceptical of ‘one theory’ and more inclined to think there are a few things going on. Interesting and surely has merit 👏
2023-10-17 17:53:13@drclairetaylor How do you choose to test for POTS? Other than 10 minute stand test, do you next reach for NASA lean test? I’ve seen patient reports that when they did tilt table test they permanently worsened their baseline. Seems like best idea is to stop any tests as soon as criteria is met.
2023-10-18 12:42:06@maryaalexand1 Personally I only do 10 Min stand. Often has to be abandoned before 10 mins as too symptomatic and diagnosis is reached. Can use stand or lean. I only do tilt if suspect POTS and stand test is Normal.
2023-10-18 15:01:21@drclairetaylor Excellent thread as always @drclairetaylor 🙌🏻 For those who would like to learn more about #PoTS, please visit our website: potsuk.org

2023-10-18 14:52:26@drclairetaylor The element that helped me the most in my long covid, except the anticoagulants, is the auricular electrostimulation (tens). I had lost 10 kg, couldn't do anything... It wasn't perfect afterwards of course, but it clearly helped a lot with bowel and vagal issues
2023-10-17 19:14:46@Eerrnn Interestingly some people find it makes it worse. Seems Person dependent
2023-10-17 23:56:20@drclairetaylor Can you list the medication please so I can show it to my general practitioner. He is willing to help.
2023-10-18 14:58:31@drclairetaylor @1goodtern I have steadily improved over the past 18 months by paying attention to my vagus nerve. Started with breathing, then humming and gargling and now use a Tens machine. It’s made a noticeable difference to me. Could be spontaneous recovery of course, but the timings coincide.
2023-10-17 17:59:40@cfs_jo @1goodtern Around 18 months is what study on it would say but that’s an average. Have heard of others find humming helpful!
2023-10-18 14:55:49@drclairetaylor Oh yeah, for absolute certain. Covid can dysregulate almost every bodily system, and each dysregulated system on its own can explain many of the problems.

2024-04-24 14:37:16Our findings suggest that several of the current hypotheses for the pathophysiology of #LongCOVID (viral reservoir, persistent inflammation, hypercoagulability, vagus nerve dysfunction) might be linked by a single pathway that is connected by serotonin reduction. 2023-10-16 23:54:17We are excited to share our new work @CellCellPress, led by Andie Wong, in collaboration with the groups of Ben Abramoff, Sara Cherry, and @ThaissLab, uncovering a multi-organ pathway with important implications for the pathogenesis of #LongCOVID. (1/10) cell.com/cell/fulltext/…
2023-10-16 23:48:49@CellCellPress @ThaissLab We followed a cohort of more than 1,500 individuals with #LongCOVID and characterized their spectrum of symptoms. We then asked whether we could identify biomarkers that distinguish individuals with Long COVID from fully recovered individuals. (2/10) pic.twitter.com/D8DdvqBPio

2024-04-24 14:40:21We assessed the metabolite profile of individuals with #LongCOVID and identified #serotonin as a molecule whose abundance is reduced both during acute COVID-19 and in individuals with multiple long-term symptoms. (3/10) pic.twitter.com/tR4zfEonjb

2024-04-24 14:41:12The phenomenon of serotonin reduction was not unique to SARS-CoV-2 infection, since we also observed it in humans and mice acutely or chronically infected with other viruses, and even in mice treated with the viral RNA mimetic poly(I:C). (4/10) pic.twitter.com/Z1zrRSUWrO

2024-04-24 14:42:37How do viral infections result in serotonin reduction? We found that type I interferon signaling was required, which is interesting in light of recent reports suggesting that viral persistence and sustained elevation of interferons are characteristic of #LongCOVID. 2024-04-24 14:43:20How do interferons drive serotonin reduction? Three mechanisms: (1) reduced intestinal uptake of tryptophan, the biosynthetic precursor of serotonin; (2) reduced counts of platelets, which carry serotonin in the circulation; (3) enhanced enzymatic turnover of serotonin.
