During the 5 years preceding the Chernobyl nuclear accident, a total of 59 cases of thyroid carcinoma were identified in the birth to 18 years age group (25 in children age <= 14 years and 34 in adolescents ages 15–18 years).

Between 1986 and 1997, the total number of thyroid carcinomas in Ukrainian children and adolescents was 577 (358 children and 219 adolescents).

At diagnosis, many of the tumors were classified at high stages, with extrathyroidal extension.
(診断時に多くの腫瘤は進行したステージで甲状腺外への進展を伴っていた)

Most patients have been treated by total or “near total” thyroidectomy based on a preoperative cytologic diagnosis and/or an intraoperative frozen section. In addition, 61.6% of children and 38.6% of adolescents underwent unilateral or bilateral modified neck lymph node dissection for clinically enlarged lymph nodes.
