ヴァージニアもノースカロライナも最後まで南部連合への加入を逡巡した州というのに。リーも積極的な奴隷制反対者ではない（という説も出ている）けれども、義父から相続した奴隷を解放したのは事実。なんか双方の過激派の行動を見ていると、南北戦争は単なるダシにしか見えない。

ヴァージニアの騒乱は「南北戦争の銅像＝奴隷制擁護の象徴」という名目で、自分たちの様々な不満のはけ口を南北戦争の銅像擁護や撤去という形に投影しているだけなんだろう。けれども、これを契機に銅像のあり方、特にフォレストなどアレな人物の銅像は博物館入りを議論する時期なのかもしれない。

私は南部の奴隷制に支えられた国家体制を支持はしないことは明言する。そのうえで、当時大多数を占めた非奴隷所有者の南部人たちの「純粋に家族や郷土社会を守るため、勇敢に戦った」信条には深い敬意を抱いている。そんな兵士の銅像まで引き倒す行為は許しがたい。どの国でも許されないでしょう。

しかし、当時の人間の善悪の尺度を、現在生きる人間が現代の尺度で図ること自体がおこがましい行為にも思えてくる。たとえば聖人として名高いジョン・ブラウンは、今の尺度では無辜の白人を虐殺したテロリスト。だからこそ南北戦争の銅像は公的な場所に設置し続けるか否かは、双方の深い議論が必要。
