After Hospitallers moved to Malta in 1530, the influence of Italian increased further. In 16th century the Tuscan variety of Italian became codified and widespread over entire Italian peninsula and its influence spread to Hospitallers as well and became widely used by them. pic.twitter.com/qiSsqg1NP8

While Latin remained the official language, Italian was very important as well, especially due to contacts with Rome. This was despite the fact that Italian knights were a minority compared to the French and the Spanish. But in a way this was also a compromise between them. pic.twitter.com/UBTWfPXOis

Italian also had an advantage of being easy to learn due to standardization of Tuscan as Italian. Therefore it was not only due to cultural and political reasons but also due to linguistic developments why Italian became more popular than French among Hospitallers. pic.twitter.com/SF9awqUCcB
