擬古典主義、スターリニズム、混成主義…宗教に取って代わろうとした姿勢、とは言え、経済・国力があった時代の話と言える

@culturaltutor The architecture of Soviet public buildings was often indeed impressive, though alas seldom replicated in residential structures...

@culturaltutor Wild to read all of this while keeping in mind all the atrocities throughout the same years. Wild to see a cathedral destroyed. Wild to be reminded of how wild we really are.

@lolajl @culturaltutor well, being a (theoretically) peoples style and putting aside aristocratic styles like over complicated gothic and barroque, to a more functional and simpler styles, has it consequences

Lola Lee Beno @lolajl

The consequence is that the powers be that put these buildings up allow people to forget what is beauty. People have a sense that something is wrong but can't articulate it. I visited Rome and it is so lively. Buildings in close quarters in the oldest section, but there's a feel. Many of these cities rebuilt structures in almost exactly the same way exterior after WWII. Similar situation happened here in the US with the urban renewal of the 50s-60s especially after the race riots. See pictures of what Washington DC looked like then and now, especially in areas where agency buildings were put up. I would like to see what would happen if a new city was built up from scratch that would have a sense of community and feel, while NOT buying into the 15-minute crap (which is fundamentally unworkable).

@lolajl @culturaltutor most differential situation is that the us was willing to destroy its history, and europe suffered the greatest war ever italy itself didnt suffer as hard, other places did, with the ussr it was a necesity to build as much without caring at first of looks

@lolajl @culturaltutor and even them, the ussr had its reasons to go that way as keeping that "separation from the past" absurd quest, and the rest of europe once recovered enough went to different ways each nation

@culturaltutor Unfortunately, In Warsaw we have a child of this architecture style which is called „Palace of culture and science”. Fortunately, year by year it dissapears among the skyscrapers. pic.twitter.com/d9EBUUfAoY

@culturaltutor Between the Communists of Russia and the Socialists of Nazism... they were truly overly optimistic of their capabilities when it came to architecture...

@culturaltutor Very much NOT my favorite building style but I do love the Palace of Art and Culture in Warsaw. It's gorgeous and impressive in person. Tbilisi also has some... interesting... Soviet architecture. pic.twitter.com/TQ4Vr1xDoJ

@culturaltutor Bolsheviks have slaughtered so much “intellegencia”, that the only architects left were party members. I know, my father was one.
