There once was a cat by the name of Tombili (a common Turkish name that is given to chubby pets) who lived in the Kadiköy district of Istanbul, Turkey. She was famous for leaning against steps and people watching. She was also known for her friendly demeanor. When she died in early August of 2016, a petition received 17,000 signatures to commemorate her life. A local sculptor by the name of Seval Sahin created a sculpture that recreated her reclining pose. A few months later, the statue disappeared, which prompted a public outcry. A Turkish politician was quoted as saying, "They stole the Tombili statue. They are enemies of everything beautiful. All they know is hate, tears, and war." The statue was returned two days later.

This was a CIA project that was commenced in the 1960s to spy on Russia. They chose a cat for the job, but what they didn’t put into consideration is the fact that cats are hard to train. The cat’s job was to eavesdrop on two men in a park outside the Soviet embassy in Washington, D.C. The cat was wired up by a veterinary surgeon who implanted a microphone into the ear canal, a small radio transmitter at the base of the skull, and a battery buried in the flesh. It was a complex project that took five years to complete and consumed a whopping $20 million. The project was closed in 1967 because the cat couldn’t obey directives. They initially believed they could train the cat but they were wrong.

As a Coast Guard Officer; we live for stuff like this. I once wrangled a passport for a beagle late at night at the Greek Embassy; with a black and white camera and bad lighting, his ears pulled back and just the right pose - Beufordopolis Beagalis was on his way to Greece as a Citizen of ancient Corfu. The very next day he jetted his way back home from JFK thanks to my friend Kitty Carlisle asking someone she knew if they would take my small dog with them as a favor - when we met on the parkway, me in a ratty old pickup with the largest plastic kennel known to man and her in a private chauffeured black limo she was not quite expecting a huge smelly beagle name Beauford(opolis), but was not about to risk offending Kitty. The carrier went in the trunk of the limo and the lid was tied down with some old clothesline I had as it now came two feet short from closing. As they pulled away all I could think of was how they now needed a rockin’ chair and Granny Clampett on the roof. Beaufordopolis sailed through Greek Customs and his owners met him saved a 6 month quarantine, we had him quarantined for 3 months in the states and he had been checked by a Vet before and after quarantine and had all possible shots. He belonged to an Army Sergeant, his wife and children…and boy did that dog stink. We had agreed to watch him for a week or two until they got settled - and then they found out about the quarantine. Then we had him for a full year. Thankfully I knew several people, who knew people, who knew people. I am not always proud of what I do. Is the statute of limitations up on this yet…? If not, I was just kidding. Who would believe this nonsense. A beagle looking like a Greek guy.

Cats in the military too! Although, not in any official capacities like horses, dogs, or mules, cats did often have a place on ships, in barracks, and as companions for those serving in the military. Unofficially, cats were often welcomed aboard ships to help with rodent control and similarly in barracks and military field offices. A good ratter could help preserve often precious food stores, help in preventing the spread of diseases, and keep rats or mice from chewing through ropes and wiring. However, many of us will be most familiar with cats that served as mascots and companions.
