　It has often been said that it is important in education to develop one's personality, but how is it possible? The task is not easy, but it would be ( 1 ) if we could start it early in our life. An Italian city called Pistoia, which has existed since the Middle Ages, is now well known for its educational policy for young children. According to the policy, children can develop their personality well when we ( 2 ) them with various opportunities to play, imagine and think on their own. For this purpose, the nursery schools there are designed as places of discovery and exploration.

　The rooms in the nursery schools where children spend their daytime are full of ideas to lead children to discoveries in their daily life. The sunlight shows different images when it comes through the colored windows. On the floor, children find various shapes of paper of plastic objects to play with and play in. One important point is that these things are always around them and not just prepared for some special occasions. ( 3 ), children can repeat their experiences, and asking or thinking about them becomes their habit. Another key point is that their nurses are always with them to support their discovery. Their support role is greater when they go outside to explore the nature around the nursery schools, or when they try to fly a kit, for example, to experience the power of the wind.

　The nurses play another important role for children's home life. The parents hear from the nurses what their children are interested in and how they express their experience. With the help of the nurses, children can continue activities they began at the nursery school at home, talking with their parents about what they found. Thus, adults ( 4 ) with each other to create an environment where children can develop their personality.
