Thread: I totally agree with @ElbridgeColby and other colleagues that Japan is not spending enough on defense and that increased are needed. Still, my view is that Japan must first work out its defense planning and how to operate its forces with max. effectiveness&efficiency.

1/ My concern is that focusing on amount of $/GDP% on defense will create inefficiencies and even counterproductive outcomes if the defense planning formula ain’t right. Defense spending increases ain’t always a magic wand that fixes defense planning problems.

2/Hell yea, Japan needs to do more given the threats&vulnerabilities it faces. Still, I’m hearing people vouching for things that may not be necessarily effective/efficient, or ignoring the ineffective/inefficient aspects of the JMOD/JSDF. Mo money mo problems.

3/ Bottom-line is that Japan needs to work on its defense planning and then increase its defense spending based on demands for the most needed assets&agendas that strengthens and sharpens the JSDF’s readiness. And yes, this needs to be done NOW.
