@Alan_Allport Is it true that the bombing (and bomb loads) were coordinated to catch first responders out and kill them as well?

2023-07-25 03:23:14
Alan Allport @Alan_Allport

@waitmanb Yes. Delayed action bombs to kill firefighters and rescue squads. Also helped (sic) that so many British HE bombs were duds, hence massive UXB problem for the German civil defence forces.

Gary Sheffield @ProfGSheffield

@Alan_Allport Excellent thread. I remember being impressed/horrified by Middlebrook's book on Hamburg when i read it as a postgrad. How does it stand up today?

2023-07-25 01:52:33
Alan Allport @Alan_Allport

@ProfGSheffield AFAIK the casualty statistics have been modified somewhat (the conventional account that 40k people died specifically in the firestorm now seems exaggerated and I have used the lower figure) but overall it’s held up well I think.

Chris Beauchamp @ChrisB_IG

@Alan_Allport Thank you for this. It makes it even stranger that you can buy Lancaster cuddly toys at the RAF Museum.

Alan Allport @Alan_Allport

@ChrisB_IG I have one on my office shelf. My own mixed feelings about this are acute.

Ian Piper💙💛 @IanPiper1

@Alan_Allport Fascinating. Were mosquito pathfinders used at Hamburg in ‘43 to improve Bomber accuracy or did that development come later?

2023-07-25 01:44:08
Alan Allport @Alan_Allport

@IanPiper1 Mosquitos were used (sent over on nights without a major raid to confuse the enemy) although since Hamburg was outside Oboe-range they were less important than they had been in the Ruhr.

@Alan_Allport Middlebrook’s book can be quite horrifying - what are your thoughts on Keith Lowe’s book? He seems to be making a similar argument to your last tweet in the thread.

2023-07-25 05:06:33
Alan Allport @Alan_Allport

@_Hydrofish I love @KeithLoweAuthor ‘s stuff but I confess I haven’t read that one.

Claire Dovey @gornalgirl

@Alan_Allport @waitmanb A civil defence alert system is in regular use that sends texts to residents to advise when and where UXBs are discovered. A regular occurance.

jj @ChildreyChurch

@Alan_Allport @ProfGSheffield Fantastic thread. In your personal opinion, although with hindsight, can such measures be justified? Such horror

Phil @PhilScribe

@KiranKandola12 @Alan_Allport @ProfGSheffield It was horrendous, but then we were up against a regime that had already subjugate much of Europe against its will.

RkaneOtterberg @OtterbergRkane

@Alan_Allport @ChrisB_IG The reason of course that Dresden is better remembered, at least to the extent it is, was the American writer Kurt Vonnegut, who having survived it as prisoner of war, made the bombing of Dresden a central event of his novel "Slaughterhouse Five."

@Alan_Allport @ChrisB_IG War is cruelty, as W. T. Sherman, informed the white citizens of Atlanta as he told them to scram as he intended to burn the place down. British embarrassment about Bomber Command's targeting of civilians made "forgetting" preferable. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Ha….

@Alan_Allport I've seen the argument made that had H2S been reserved for anti-submarine aircraft (of which there were pitifully few, thanks to Harris) it would have had more effect on the war effort. Once the Germans recovered one from a crashed a/c, they soon learned to jam it. Me? Dunno.

2023-07-25 05:32:02
Alan Allport @Alan_Allport

@MarvinPA11 I find this an unconvincing argument thanks in part to @ProfCMBell’s excellent work on the subject

David Marten Guthoff @DELTAMIKEGOLF

@Alan_Allport Until this day we regularly dig up some bombs in construction sides in Hamburg. There is estimated to be a few thousands still underground…

2023-07-25 05:20:07
Alan Allport @Alan_Allport

@DELTAMIKEGOLF A huge % of RAF high-explosive bombs were duds.

Sue @ Konzepts 🐄 @Konzepts

@Alan_Allport @KeithAPettit Thank you for posting this. It’s as balanced as it can get. Perhaps it is good that you left out the absolute horror of the firestorm. We should never forget that most of the civilians where not active Nazis, however they suffered immeasurably. 37,000 to 40,000 died during that… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Ed @edruba

@Alan_Allport My mom was a little girl in Hamburg when the bombs fell. She said a bomb hit the apartment they were living in. They left the city for the country side in the east.
