@historyinmemes What an incredible story of resilience and breaking stereotypes! Sessue Hayakawa's journey and legacy are truly inspiring. And being almost on par with Chaplin ? I am ashamed I haven´t seen nothing but The Bridge on the Riwer Kwai and no old stuff from him.l 😒🎥 #TrailBlazer

@historyinmemes His wife, Tsuru Aoki, was also a star in her own films, as well as a co-star in many of his films. She retired from acting to raise their family. They remained married until her death in 1961.

@historyinmemes Man was a French resistance fighter he was a actual hero and wasn't acting as one?

FUDummy @truthhurtsdawg

@historyinmemes A lot of the type casting still happens today. When i see certain actors show up in a series or movie, I automatically know hes a "villian" and cant be trusted. Some things never change.

every silver lining’s got a touch of grey @jmin110

@historyinmemes hopefully he counted his stars, if he didn’t get forced to spend time in a concentration camp during ww2.

Ryan Antonio Paz @irrpfad

@historyinmemes Thank you for this fascinating post. Hayakawa was brilliant in Bridge on the River Kwai. Must have been his experience in silent movies that gave him the ability, largely with just facial expressions, to convey the tragedy in the figure of Colonel Saito.

Exhausted Boba @ExhaustedBoba

@historyinmemes He’s precisely why white Hollywood producers still portray Asian men badly today. He was too desirable in the eyes of white women and the white men of the day felt threatened. Yellow peril was and continues to pretty much be unofficial Hollywood policy.

@historyinmemes Hayakawa produced a film called "The Dragon Painter" in 1919, where he plays as a young painter who is disillusioned that his fiancee has turned into a dragon. In 2014, the film was added to the National Film Registry. So that's another legacy Hayakawa made.

@historyinmemes 1st thought: past eras don’t necessarily mean less “advanced” in certain aspects. We progress, we regress, it’s never linear. 2nd thought: fascinating story! Made me want to know about the man. 3rd: fear Hollywood makes a biopic of him one day. Biopics kill all imagination.

@historyinmemes Interesting that white women being attracted to Asian men has been so effectively coded out of [depictions of] our society.

YSL @Fysliu

@historyinmemes He played a cruel and cruel 🇯🇵 youth in"The Cheat",and he was severely criticized by the 🇯🇵public opinion in his motherland, and was labeled a national humiliation. This matter deeply regrets and injustices Hayakawa Sessou, who is very patriotic After the end of World War2 1/2

@historyinmemes He was not very tall, so he used to ride on a box horse. So, we still call it "SESSU" in Japanese studios when we put it on a box to make it taller for easy to shoot.

red june @redjune0225

@historyinmemes He wasn't that tall, so he was using a box as a stepping stone. In the Entertainment industry, it is still called "Do Sessue" to use boxes. His grave is in a cemetery in Shoin Shrine in Tokyo. twitter.com/kikuchiyo_0518…

@historyinmemes He may not have acted as a hero in film but he was one in real life (WW2). That's even better.

@historyinmemes Sessue Hayakawa: Silent film star, defied stereotypes, villain and sex symbol, challenged norms with his company, adapted due to restrictions, joined WWII resistance, got Oscar nod, embraced Zen Buddhism, died 1973 at 87.

Robert Hicks (Alpha Thing) @RobH_GOAT

@historyinmemes He was great in De Mille's The Cheat (1915). What a cad! I've only ever seen his later post WW2 films in addition, but obviously superb in Bridge on the River Kwai.
