In Japanese "w" is short for 笑う which means "to laugh"

But "wwww" looks like grass growing, so it's similar to 草生える, which means "grow grass" but means "lol"

TBH I really enjoy the phrase "草生える" because it's a visual pun, and we don't have that in English
