Translation discourse: If you leave words in Japanese you should have a VERY FUCKING GOOD REASON. "Ni-chan" and "Ni-ni" and (sorry) "senpai" have no business being left in English. (Again, unless you have a VERY FUCKING GOOD REASON). The default should always be 100% English.

@ZackDavisson @UnseenJapanSite I remember finding it odd when I was a teenager and the official translator of Fruits Bakset changed and the new one chose to keep all the honorifics and had to write tons of annotations everywhere. It was so weird and annoying to read.

@DeadBlueMorpho @ZackDavisson @UnseenJapanSite That was definitely a relic of the past in anime translation. Translators feared too much about context being lost. I'm fine with a tiny bit of annotation for those who don't know, but back in the day, they definitely overdid it.

@heychrisfox @ZackDavisson @UnseenJapanSite Yeah it was like in 2006 or smth like this in France. Back in the day i didn't know anything abt Japanese culture and read manga for entertainment and I remember being annoyed that I suddenly had to read so much about japanese honorifics.
2020-11-28 19:01:53確かに2006あたりからフランスではこんな感じだった。あの頃日本文化のことは微塵も知らずエンタメのために漫画を読んでたけど、いきなり日本語の敬称についてあれほど読まなければならない事に面倒臭がってた。

@DeadBlueMorpho @ZackDavisson @UnseenJapanSite There def is a learning curve. But that's true of experiencing any cultures' media. There are so many weird idioms and expressions in English, but people learn them because they're silly and fun. Us anime nerds learn honorifics because they're unique and culturally insightful.

@heychrisfox @DeadBlueMorpho @UnseenJapanSite That's it right there. Anime and manga are no longer for "anime nerds." It is for everyone. I think that it is the anime nerds who are having a difficult time realizing that and letting go. They are not longer the main audience.
